This is what I do for a practice routine.
- Start with a well shuffled deck with one card having a bottom breather crimp.
- Perform my two step cull that ends with the Aces on top. (Culling)
- Shuffle adding one card on top and perform cutting the aces. (slip cut, double cut, pop out move, deck crimp)
- Insert the aces in different parts of the deck and perform a multiple shift putting the aces on the bottom. Cut them to the middle and do a riffle shuffle to bring them to the top. (Multiple shift, riffle shuffle)
- Faro shuffle, and riffle shuffle to distribute the aces and perform Erdnase cull shuffle to get the aces back on top.
- Do “Ases y dados sin los dados” (Riffle shuffle and Faro Shuffle, second deal)
- Perform “Supreme Control” from “Card File #2”, by Jerry Metzer. This effect uses the bottom breather crimp. (cutting to breather, riffle shuffle control)
- Stack the aces for a five handed game of poker using different stacking methods: pure riffle stack; Zarrow stack, two riffle stack (Carpenter?), Dai Vernon stack from Poker Demonstration in Early Vernon, Milk stack, Erdnase Overhand Stack, one shuffle bluff stack (Carpenter)
- Perform the pickup stack (Breaks and Zarrow Shuffle)
- Perform “Cutting the Aces” using my ace control.
- Stack the deck for Vernon’s Poker Demonstration from the book “Early Vernon”, edited by Faucett Ross.
- Practice various false shuffles: Classic push through, Artanis false shuffle (The Close-up Magic of Frank Garcia – Part I , Frank Garcia), Solomon, Zarrow (The Complete Works of Derek Dingle, Derek Dingle), Overhand, Rosette shuffle.
- Practice various false cuts: Ose, Erdnase Fancy Blind Cut #1, Erdnase Fancy Blind Cut #2, variation on Erdnase #1, variation on Erdnase #2, Up the ladder from Expert Card Technique, variation on Up the Ladder, my in-the-hands false cuts
- Perform Vernon’s Poker Demonstration from “Early Vernon”
- Practice Vernon’s Twisting the Aces from “More Inner Secrets of Card Magic”
- Practice the Last Trick of Dr. Daley from “The Dai Vernon Book of Magic”
- Practice “Oil and Water”
Depending on how much time I have to practice I modify the list. I can easily omit some items. Others I modify. For example, instead of stacking the cards for the Poker Demonstration I sometimes stack the deck either in new deck order and use Ortiz’s method (Darwin Ortiz at the Card Table” for getting the cards into Si Stebbins order, or put the deck in the Osterlind stack order. Then I substitute other effects for step 14. Likewise I can practice other tricks for steps 15, 16, and 17.
