Refer to Marlo’s booklet for a more detailed description of how to apply the stack to different numbers of players. I always deal out to five players so I always use the keys 8451.
Lessinout Stack
A brief description for a five handed game using the Lessinout stack:
- Crimp the bottom card, and have the four aces on top of the deck.
- Under cut half the deck and run eight cards onto the four aces, then throw the remaining cards back to the bottom
- Start another overhand shuffle by running four cards and throw on top.
- Start another overhand shuffle by running five cards and throw on top.
- Start another overhand shuffle by running one card and throw on top.
At this point you have stacked two aces and still have two aces on top of the deck. Repeat steps 2 through 5 to stack the other two aces. The stack is now on the bottom of the deck, under the crimped card. Marlo does one more overhand shuffle, running blocks from the top to the bottom of the deck to move the stack closer to the center.
Cut to the crimp and the deck is ready for the deal.
So this stack has a total of nine overhand shuffles, with 36 single cards being run. Below is a video of me practicing the stack.
451-5 Stack
The 451 stack does the same thing much more efficiently.
- Crimp the bottom card, and have the four aces on top.
- Riffle shuffle four cards below the crimp, while keeping the aces on top.
- Double cut the top ace to the bottom of the deck.
- Perform two more riffle shuffles, adding four cards to the top with each shuffle, maintaining the bottom stack. At this point the order of the cards, from the top, is
- Eight indifferent cards
- Three aces
- The remainder of the deck down to the crimped card
- Four indifferent cards
- Ace.
- Start an overhand shuffle by running four cards and throw on top.
- Start another overhand shuffle by running five cards and throw on top.
- Start another overhand shuffle by running one card and throw on top.
- Start another overhand shuffle by running five cards and throw on top.
- Start another normal overhand shuffle of about fifteen cards to move the stack to the middle of the deck.
The deck is now ready to be cut and dealt. Note how the riffle shuffles reinforce the notion of the deck being truly mixed. The number of single card runs has been reduced from 36 to 15. Below is a video of me practicing the stack.
Milking the 451-6 Stack
An alternative to the above is the replace the adding of four indifferent cards below the crimp, with a single milk shuffle run.
- Crimp the bottom card, and have the four aces on top.
- Perform two riffle shuffles, adding four cards to the top with each shuffle,
- At this point the order of the cards, from the top, is eight indifferent cards, four aces, the rest of the deck and the crimped card on the bottom,
- Start an overhand shuffle by running four cards and throw on top.
- Start another overhand shuffle by running five cards and throw on top.
- Start another overhand shuffle by running one card and throw on top.
- Start another overhand shuffle by running six cards and throw on top.
- Now do a single milk shuffle. I have found that if your left fingers hold the bottom card as you grasp the deck to begin the next shuffle, that card will break loose and lay on the left finger tips. Then you can run four cards and throw on top. This helps disguise the milking action. Also a milking action of pulling the top and bottom cards together makes a distinct sound, while this sounds normal.
- Start another normal overhand shuffle of about fifteen cards to move the stack to the middle of the deck.
Cut to the crimp and the deck is ready for the deal.
