Maybe We Should Just Accept We’re Compromised

We perform security theater daily. We update passwords, enable two-factor authentication, install VPNs, use encrypted messaging apps. We do these things because we’ve been told they make us “secure.” But what if I told you that despite all of this, you’re almost certainly compromised already—and that accepting this might actually be the most rational security posture?

The Verification Problem

In 1984, Ken Thompson delivered a Turing Award lecture that should have changed everything. He demonstrated how a compiler could inject backdoors into compiled code, and crucially, hide this capability in itself. Even if you audited the compiler’s source code and found it clean, the backdoor would persist. His conclusion was stark: you can’t trust code you didn’t completely write yourself, and even then, you’re trusting the tools that built your tools.

We didn’t listen. Instead, we made everything worse.

Today’s software stack is an impossible tower of dependencies. Your average web application relies on hundreds of libraries, each with their own dependencies, maintained by volunteers you’ve never heard of, running on operating systems with millions of lines of code, executing on processors with billions of transistors designed by one company and manufactured by another halfway around the world.

At any layer—from silicon to cloud—there could be a backdoor. And unlike Thompson’s theoretical compiler, many of these backdoors are documented fact, not speculation.

We Know Systems Are Compromised

This isn’t paranoid speculation:

Hardware: The NSA’s ANT catalog revealed implants for routers, hard drives, and BIOS chips. Cisco routers were intercepted during shipping, modified, and repackaged. The semiconductor supply chain crosses multiple countries with different allegiances.

Software: The 2024 xz backdoor showed how patient attackers can spend years contributing to open-source projects before introducing malicious code. Nation-states have backdoored commercial encryption products. Zero-day vulnerabilities are stockpiled and sold to the highest bidder.

Networks: Your ISP can see everything you do. VPNs just shift the surveillance to a different company. Tor exit nodes are frequently compromised. Even “secure” messaging apps can be defeated if your device’s operating system is compromised.

AI: Now we’re adding systems that write code we can’t fully understand, trained on datasets we can’t fully audit, with emergent behaviors we can’t predict. The trust problem just went recursive.

The Futility of Perfect Security

Here’s what security professionals won’t tell you at conferences: perfect security is impossible because verification is impossible.

To trust your system, you need to audit it. To audit it, you need tools. To trust those tools, you need to audit them. To audit the auditing tools, you need… you see the problem. There’s no trustworthy foundation to build on. It’s turtles all the way down.

Zero-trust architecture sounds good in theory—”never trust, always verify”—but it still has to trust something. The authentication system. The certificate authority. The cryptographic primitives. The hardware security module. The human reviewing the logs. Move the trust, minimize it, compartmentalize it, but you can’t eliminate it.

And even if you could somehow verify every line of code and every transistor in your system today, you’d have to do it again after every update, every patch, every driver installation. It’s not sustainable.

What “Accepting Compromise” Actually Means

I’m not suggesting we abandon all security measures and live in digital anarchy. I’m suggesting we get honest about what security theater accomplishes versus what actually matters.

Accepting compromise means:

Threat modeling, not security theater. Stop asking “am I secure?” and start asking “secure from whom?” Your threat model determines your paranoia level. Protecting against your ex-partner requires different measures than protecting against the NSA. One is achievable; the other probably isn’t.

Defense in depth, not defense in faith. Since any layer can be compromised, make sure a breach at one layer doesn’t mean total compromise. Compartmentalize. Limit blast radius. Assume breach and design accordingly.

Behavior over tools. No amount of encrypted messaging apps will protect you if you’re careless about what you say. The best security is often not generating compromising information in the first place.

Accepting acceptable risk. Security always trades off against convenience, cost, and functionality. Every security decision is a risk calculation. Sometimes “good enough” is actually good enough.

The Liberation of Assumed Breach

Paradoxically, accepting that you’re probably compromised can be liberating.

It frees you from the exhausting performance of security theater. You don’t need to obsess over which VPN has the best privacy policy when all VPNs could be compromised. You don’t need to compare encrypted messaging apps when your phone’s operating system might be backdoored.

It shifts focus to what matters: operational security. What sensitive information are you actually creating? Who has realistic motivation to target you? What damage could they actually do? These questions matter far more than which password manager you use.

It forces honesty about the digital world we’ve built. We now run critical infrastructure—power grids, financial systems, hospitals, elections—on technology that no one can fully verify or trust. That’s terrifying, but denying it doesn’t make it less true.

Practical Implications

If you accept that perfect security is impossible and compromise is likely, what changes?

For individuals: Stop stressing about perfect security. Use basic hygiene (unique passwords, 2FA, updates), but recognize these are speed bumps, not walls. For truly sensitive information, keep it offline or don’t create it digitally. The most secure data is data that doesn’t exist.

For organizations: Design systems assuming internal compromise. Limit privileges ruthlessly. Monitor for anomalies, not just external attacks. Accept that you will be breached; focus on resilience and recovery, not just prevention.

For society: We need hard conversations about trust in digital infrastructure. Can we continue to digitize everything when we can’t verify anything? Should critical systems require verifiable hardware built in trusted foundries? What’s the acceptable risk level for systems that could kill people if compromised?

The Alternative

The alternative to accepting compromise is either:

  1. Denial: Pretend the security products you buy actually make you secure. Live in blissful ignorance until you’re not.
  2. Paranoia: Go completely off-grid. No digital devices. Cash only. Face-to-face communication in random locations. This works, but the life cost is enormous and you’ve essentially left modern society.
  3. Hope: Trust that the good guys are slightly ahead of the bad guys and that attacks won’t happen to you. This is most people’s default position, and honestly, it’s not crazy—most of us aren’t interesting targets.

Conclusion: Nihilism or Realism?

Is accepting that we’re compromised nihilistic defeatism or clear-eyed realism?

I think it’s realism. The security industry has sold us a comforting lie: that with the right products and practices, you can be “secure.” But security isn’t a state you achieve; it’s a process of risk management against specific threats. Perfect security was always impossible, and modern computing complexity has made it even more impossible.

The question isn’t whether you’re compromised—you probably are, somewhere in the stack. The question is: does it matter?

For most people, most of the time, the answer is no. The threat model doesn’t justify the security cost. Yes, advertisers track you. Yes, nation-states might have backdoors in your hardware. Yes, your data might leak in the next breach. But unless you’re a high-value target, no one is analyzing your specific data. You’re compromised, but the compromise is probably boring.

For high-value targets—journalists, activists, executives with trade secrets, people in authoritarian regimes—the calculation is different. They need to assume active adversaries and act accordingly. But even they can’t achieve perfect security, just expensive security that raises the bar.

The rest of us can probably relax. Use reasonable precautions. Don’t be stupid. But stop pretending that the security products you buy are actually making you “secure.”

We’re all compromised. We’re still here. Life goes on.

Maybe that’s the most subversive security insight of all: accepting compromise doesn’t mean giving up. It means focusing on actual threats instead of theoretical ones. It means spending your energy on things that matter instead of security theater that doesn’t.

The age of assumed breach isn’t dystopia. It’s just reality. Time to start acting like it.
