If you spent any time in front of a CRT monitor in the early ’90s, the roar of a radial engine through a PC speaker is a sound you never forget. Aces of the Pacific<\/em> didn’t just give us a game; it handed us the flight stick and dropped us straight into the sun-blinded skies above Wake Island and Midway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

It was a simple game, you against the enemy (or machine). Todays flight simulators offer greater realism, to the point where you need an actual pilots license to figure them out. The graphics are outstanding, but the complexity of the games gets overwhelming. You simply started flying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I decided my next AI coding effort would be to recreate Aces of the Pacific. So I fired up Claude Code<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I started by asking if it could code a game like “Aces of the Pacific”. Claude said it could and suggested starting with something simple, a single plane and mission. In under an hour I had a basic flight simulator up and running. From there it was simply a question of adding features: more planes, more missions, joystick support, improvements to rendering, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within a day I have a pretty fun game. So much fun that I actually had to go and buy a joystick. Here are some screenshots of the game<\/p>\n\n\n
