Climax: Four of Spades changes to red Four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">One of the early routines I learned was an Ambitious card routine using the Ace, Two, Three, Four, and Five of Spades, by Derek Dingle. I have it in &#8220;The Complete Works of Derek Dingle&#8221; by Richard Kaufman, titled &#8220;Too Many Cards&#8221;.  The patter for that version is on the theme of suggesting that the reason the spectator can&#8217;t follow is that the magician is using too many cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Larry Jennings has his four card version described in &#8220;The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings&#8221; titled &#8220;Ambitious Classic Variation&#8221;. This version does not list any patter in the book, but you can watch Jennings  perform his five card version at <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/zIOWUdw-B9E?si=a9CC9xXiGyqsPZN9\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/zIOWUdw-B9E?si=a9CC9xXiGyqsPZN9<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Here is Jennings four card version with some patter added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>SETUP<\/strong>: From face-up deck, cut Four of Hearts to back. Upjog and strip out A-2-3-4 of Spades. Flip them face down onto the deck back. Turn deck face down (Spades now face up on top). Spread the face-up Spades, get left pinky break below top face-down card (4H). Arrange Spades Ace-Four from face, square packet, and add card above break. Set double card (4S\/4H) on Three. Flip packet face down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;Let me introduce you to our four shadow warriors&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ACE PENETRATIONS (\u00d72)<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Turn top card (Ace) face up<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Place Ace second from bottom using Larry&#8217;s pull-down: Hold dealing position, forefinger curled at outer end, packet along thumb base, downward pressure pulls bottom card down\u2014insert Ace into break<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;The Ace is the youngest apprentice. Watch as I seal him deep within the group&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Show Ace not on bottom (palm-up display shows 4S\u2014important for later)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;He&#8217;s trapped between his brothers&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Show Ace not on top (same technique as double turnover)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;Completely buried in the middle&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Snap fingers, Quadruple Turnover (all cards above bottom)\u2014Ace on top<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;But with his shadow step technique\u2014he vanishes and reappears at the top!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"6\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Push off Ace as single (double-backer allows this)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Repeat once<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;Let&#8217;s make this harder. I&#8217;ll seal him even deeper&#8230; No bottom [show], no top [show]&#8230; Yet the Ace ninja cannot be contained!&#8221;<\/em> [Snap] <em>&#8220;Shadow step!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Then table Ace face up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;The Ace has proven his skill. He rests.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>TWO OF SPADES<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Turn top card (Two), take in right hand<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;Now the Two\u2014master of infiltration&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Flip packet face up with right fingers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Place Two on Four, fanned right<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Single Buckle bottom card, spread double\u2014fan shows 2-4-3 (Four is double)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;I&#8217;ll place him between the Three and Four ninjas\u2014surrounded by his allies&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Insert Two between Three and Four, square<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Snap, spread Four right, Single Buckle bottom, spread double\u2014Two now face down<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;But watch\u2014he activates his camouflage jutsu and turns invisible!&#8221;<\/em> [Snap]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"7\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Outjog face-down double, take into left hand dealing position<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Turn 3S and 4S face down, insert double between them<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;Even when sealed face-down between his brothers&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"9\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Square, snap, Biddle Position<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Drag bottom card left, then next card\u2014Two appears face up<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>[Snap] &#8220;His stealth training allows him to reveal himself at will!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"11\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Lift top double and sidejogged Two as unit, table Two on Ace<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Place double on single<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;The Two ninja has also proven worthy. Two down, two to go.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>PACKET NOW<\/strong>: 3S, red 4H, 4S (top down)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>THREE OF SPADES<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Flash top card (Three), place to bottom<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;The Three is the clan&#8217;s master of substitution techniques. Watch closely&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Double Turnover\u2014shows 4S<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;Here&#8217;s the Four on top&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Flip double down, deal top to bottom<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;I&#8217;ll send him to the bottom of the deck&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Double Turnover\u2014shows 3S (&#8220;Watch the Three&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;And the Three to the top. Now watch the Three ninja carefully&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Flip double down, deal top to table, place double on it<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;I place the Three on the bottom of just two cards&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"6\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Snap, flip top\u2014Three on top<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>[Snap] &#8220;Substitution jutsu! He&#8217;s switched positions with the Four!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"7\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Flip down, push double, take in right hand (&#8220;Back of Three&#8230;&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;This is the back of the Three&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"8\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Turn left hand palm down showing 4S (&#8220;&#8230;back of Four&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;&#8230;and this is the back of the Four. Two ninjas, face down&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"9\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Turn palm up, place single Four on double<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Snap, Double Turnover\u2014Three penetrated<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>[Snap] &#8220;But the Three ninja passes through solid matter like a shadow through paper!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"11\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Take double (3S\/4S) as one, table onto Ace &#8220;as the Two&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;Three masters have demonstrated their skills.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CLIMAX<\/strong>: Turn over red Four for color change<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;But the Fourth ninja\u2014the grandmaster\u2014possesses the ultimate technique. He doesn&#8217;t just move through shadows&#8230; he can transform his very essence. Behold\u2014the Four of Spades has become&#8230;&#8221;<\/em> [Turn over] <em>&#8220;&#8230;the Four of Hearts! The master of disguise has revealed his true identity\u2014he was never one of the Shadow Clan at all. He was a spy from the Crimson Clan, hiding in plain sight the entire time!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Note<\/strong>: The repeated views of the 4S throughout the routine subliminally reinforce it as a Spade, making the final transformation to Hearts more impactful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Afterthoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In this four card version you are left with four face up cards on the table, when the spectator thinks there are only three.  There isn&#8217;t a clean up. In Dingle&#8217;s routine there are four cards on the table, with the five being face down and hidden.
