{"id":7316,"date":"2025-07-23T21:48:45","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T21:48:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/robertjwallace.com\/?p=7316"},"modified":"2026-01-11T14:51:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T14:51:10","slug":"impossible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/robertjwallace.com\/es\/impossible\/","title":{"rendered":"Impossible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">This is another Larry Jennings trick, which was written up by Harry Lorayne in his magazine, Apocalypse V9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Setup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Crimp the bottom card in advance.  I use a breather crimp that when the deck is cut becomes the bottom card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Hand the deck to the spectator and let them shuffle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Take the deck back, cutting the crimped card to the bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>\u201cThink of a number between 1 and 10. Got it? Good. There\u2019s no way I could know it, right? Totally impossible.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You&#8217;re going to say \u201cimpossible\u201d a few more times\u2014lean into it. It\u2019s part of the buildup.<br>Now explain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>\u201cI want you to silently deal three face-down piles, each with the number of cards you\u2019re thinking of. If your number is 4, you\u2019d deal 4 cards into each pile\u2014like this\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Demonstrate briefly (and casually discard those cards onto the deck afterward). Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>\u201cDo that now while I look away. I don\u2019t want to hear how many cards you deal.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Selection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">With your head still turned, say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>\u201cDrop the rest of the deck onto any one of the three piles.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>\u201cPick up one of the other two piles, shuffle it, and take out any card. Remember it. Drop the rest of the pile onto the deck. Then drop your selected card on top.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>\u201cNow shuffle the last packet and drop it on top.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Their card is now buried and completely lost\u2014yet under your full control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Reveal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Turn back to face them. Pick up the deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>\u201cThere\u2019s no way I could know what your card is\u2026 or where it is, right?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Casually overhand shuffle, running exactly 10 cards singly. Then throw the rest of the deck on top. Give the deck one normal overhand shuffle, then cut the crimped card back to the bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Hand the deck to the spectator:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>\u201cSpell the word impossible, dealing one card per letter.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Before they deal the final \u201cE,\u201d ask for their card. Then have them turn over that last card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s their selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Why It Works<br>This trick is entirely self-working. Their card ends up 10th from the top\u2014perfect for spelling \u201cimpossible\u201d (10 letters).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Want to mix it up? Use different words or names. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Use incredible or can\u2019t be done (also 10 letters).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Run 12 cards instead, and spell your name\u2014or theirs\u2014if it&#8217;s 12 letters long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You can also count 10 cards silently onto the table as you talk, instead of running them with a shuffle.
