It states: &#8216;When you run out of friends to show card tricks to, the only people left are relatives&#8230; and they&#8217;re the hardest cases to solve.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Effect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A card is selected fairly from a small packet through a process of logical deduction. The spectator follows Holmes&#8217; famous methodology, systematically eliminating possibilities until only one truth remains &#8211; their selected card. This effect works perfectly for telephone performances or any setting where you want to demonstrate &#8220;mathematical deduction.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Method<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Initial Investigation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Gather the evidence<\/strong> &#8211; Count off 10 cards from the top of a borrowed, shuffled deck\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Display them as you count: 4, then 3, then 2, then 1<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">&#8220;Every good investigation starts with collecting evidence.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Hand these cards to the spectator<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Eliminate some possibilities<\/strong> &#8211; Have the spectator shuffle the 10 cards thoroughly\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">&#8220;A good detective never works with planted evidence. Shuffle these thoroughly.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Reduce the field<\/strong> &#8211; &#8220;Now, return some of these cards to the deck &#8211; less than half, so I can&#8217;t possibly deduce how many you&#8217;re holding. We need to narrow down our suspects, but not too much.&#8221;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Critical:<\/strong> They must keep 4-9 cards and return at least 1<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Selection Process<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Identify the suspect<\/strong> &#8211; &#8220;Look at the bottom card of your remaining packet. This will be our &#8216;suspect&#8217; &#8211; remember it well, but don&#8217;t let me catch even a glimpse.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Holmes Method<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Present the methodology:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;Sherlock Holmes was history&#8217;s greatest detective, and he had a very specific method for solving impossible cases. His most famous principle was: &#8216;When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.&#8217; But before he could eliminate anything, he had to gather all the clues systematically. Holmes believed that every mystery had exactly eight crucial steps to reach the truth.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"6\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The systematic approach<\/strong> &#8211; &#8220;We&#8217;re going to use Holmes&#8217; eight-step deduction method. For each step, transfer one card from the top to the bottom of your packet, spelling S-H-E-R-L-O-C-K.&#8221;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">They transfer exactly 8 cards (one per letter)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">&#8220;Each transfer represents Holmes gathering another crucial clue.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Final Deduction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"7\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Emphasize the impossibility<\/strong> &#8211; &#8220;Now, I have no way of knowing how many cards you hold, what your selection was, or where it might be. But Holmes taught us that systematic elimination reveals the truth.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The elimination process<\/strong> &#8211; &#8220;We&#8217;ll now apply Holmes&#8217; elimination principle. Deal cards alternately &#8211; one card goes to the deck (eliminated as impossible), and one goes to the bottom of your packet (remaining for further investigation). Continue this process until you&#8217;ve eliminated all impossibilities.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The revelation<\/strong> &#8211; &#8220;According to Holmes&#8217; principle, whatever remains must be the truth. Turn over your final card.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>[When they reveal their selection]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>&#8220;As the great detective would say: &#8216;However improbable it may seem, this must be your card. The deduction is elementary!'&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enhanced Patter Elements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Opening Hook<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we&#8217;re going to solve an impossible mystery using the exact method that made Sherlock Holmes famous. But instead of solving crimes, we&#8217;re going to solve the mystery of a chosen card using pure logical deduction.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">During the Spelling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Holmes always said that patience and methodology were the keys to solving any mystery. S-H-E-R-L-O-C-K &#8211; eight steps to the truth. Transfer each card deliberately, just as Holmes would examine each piece of evidence.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building Tension<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Now comes the moment of truth. Holmes never guessed &#8211; he deduced. Through systematic elimination, he could solve cases that baffled Scotland Yard. Let&#8217;s see if his method works on our mystery.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Final Elimination<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;One by one, we eliminate the impossible suspects. The &#8220;deduction&#8221; is actually pure mathematics disguised as logical reasoning &#8211; which makes it even more appropriate for the Holmes theme!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Afterthoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Another method I like to use to get the right number of cards in the packet is to ask  the spectator to cut off about a quarter of the deck.  Then I tell them to put back about half of those cards.
