The performer removes several cards from the deck, calling them &#8220;key cards.&#8221; The values of these key cards are totaled to arrive at a number. When that number is counted down from the top of the deck, the selected card is found at that exact position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">A complete deck of 52 playing cards (no jokers)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">M\u00e9todo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Initial Setup<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Have a spectator shuffle the deck<\/strong> and return it to you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Have the spectator select a card.<\/strong> As you spread the cards for the selection to be returned:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Let your left thumb rest on the back of the 7th card from the top<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Hold that card stationary while your right fingers pull the 8th card under the spread to the right (this is the same technique as a Cull)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Keep your right fingers on the face of this culled 8th card throughout the process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Continue spreading<\/strong> with the remaining cards going below the jogged 8th card.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Return the selection:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Separate the deck around the center<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Have the selection placed on top of the left-hand portion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Push it off to the side and raise the left-hand cards to display the selection once more<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">As you push it flush, obtain a little finger break below it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Place the right-hand cards on top, maintaining your break<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Positioning the Selection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Create two breaks:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Get a right third finger break below the top 8 cards (easy because the 8th card is jogged)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Maintain the left little finger break below the selection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Execute the cuts in this order:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Cut the 8 cards above the upper break to the table<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Cut all cards above the lower break onto the 8-card packet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Cut half the remaining cards onto the tabled packet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Place the final cards on top<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Result:<\/strong> The selection is now 9th from the bottom of the deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding the Key Cards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"7\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Explain to spectators<\/strong> that you&#8217;re looking for &#8220;key cards&#8221; in the deck.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The counting procedure:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Mentally count backwards from 10 to 1<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Turn cards face up from the top of the deck one at a time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Whenever a card&#8217;s value matches your mental count, place it aside as a &#8220;key card&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) have a value of 10<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Detailed Counting Process<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Example walkthrough:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Turn first card, mentally count &#8220;10&#8221; with no matches, deal one more card for &#8220;0&#8221; (don&#8217;t place aside)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Start the count over at &#8220;10&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Important rules:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Maximum of 4 counting cycles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Maximum of 4 key cards can be placed aside<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">After placing any card aside, restart the count at &#8220;10&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Backup Method for Near Misses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If a card is one value away from your mental count:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Example: You&#8217;re counting &#8220;7&#8221; and turn up a &#8220;6&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Turn the next card<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">If it&#8217;s not a &#8220;5,&#8221; scoop it under the pile<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Then pick up the &#8220;6&#8221; and place it aside as a key card<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">This repositions the cards to make the &#8220;6&#8221; work as a key card<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Revelation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"9\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Have the spectator total the values<\/strong> of all key cards placed aside.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Count down from the top<\/strong> of the deck to that number &#8211; the selected card will be at that exact position.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Performance Notes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The effect is more impressive with 3-4 key cards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The backup method ensures you can always find at least one key card<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Emphasize that you have no way of knowing the card&#8217;s location after the shuffling and cutting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Afterthoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This trick exemplifies Larry Jennings&#8217;
