I’ll use just these 10 cards – 5 red and 5 black.”

Display the Cards: Fan the cards briefly to show the red/black mix, but don’t reveal that they’re completely separated.

Explain the Game: “The game is simple – if the colors match, you win. If they don’t match, I win.”

First Shuffle: “Let me shuffle these cards.” Perform a reverse faro shuffle, outjogging every second card starting with the second card, then stripping them out and placing them on top.

Continue Shuffling: “Let me mix them a bit more.” Perform two more reverse faros in the same manner (three total).

Optional Shuffle: “Would you like me to shuffle once more?” If they say yes, perform a fourth reverse faro.

Dealing: “Now, let’s see who wins.” Deal the top five cards into a pile on the table. Place the remaining five cards beside them.

Revelation: “Let’s see if the colors match.” Turn over the top card of each pile simultaneously. They’ll be opposite colors. Lay the two cards face up, overlapping each other. Continue turning over each pair, overlapping them so both cards are visible. They’ll all be opposite colors.

Conclusión: “Well, looks like all the pairs are mismatched. I win this round!”

Important Collection Method: After showing all pairs, squeeze the overlapping pairs together and pick them up, maintaining their order. This ensures that each left-hand card remains beneath its corresponding right-hand card.

Phase 2: The Impossible Free Choice

Continuation: “Let me show you something even more interesting.” Keep the cards in the paired order you just collected.

Follow-up Shuffles: Perform either 2 or 3 more reverse faros (if you did 4 in Phase 1, do 2 more; if you did 3 in Phase 1, do 3 more).

Cut: Casually cut the top card to the bottom.

Free Selection: Fan the cards and say, “This time, you get to choose which cards we use. Point to any five cards you want.” Let them point to any five cards, which you outjog from the fan.

Dealing: Remove these five selected cards one at a time, starting with the rightmost (top) outjogged card. As each card is removed, deal it to a pile on the table. This process reverses their order. Set the remaining five cards beside them.

Final Revelation: “Let’s see if your luck has changed.” Turn over each pair of cards, again overlapping them to show both cards simultaneously. They’ll all be opposite colors.

Final Comment: “Amazing how the cards always know exactly what to do, isn’t it?”

Why It Works

This trick works because of several mathematical principles:

The reverse faros maintain specific mathematical relationships within the deck

The Gilbreath Principle ensures the opposite color pairing

The specific number of shuffles (either 3+3 or 4+2) combined with the cut provides a mathematical reset

The collection method after Phase 1 (with left hand card always under the right hand card) is crucial for maintaining the mathematical relationship

In Phase 2, removing and dealing the five selected cards in a specific order (starting with the rightmost outjogged card) reverses their order, which is essential for maintaining the mathematical relationships

Even when the spectator points to any five cards, the mathematical relationship is preserved because of the initial color separation

The beauty of this routine is that it appears to give the spectator free choice while actually being completely controlled by mathematical principles, making it 100% surefire every time.

This is based on the Gilbreath Principle.
