Before we begin, I want you to look at these 10 cards you’ve selected and think of any number between 1 and 10. Don’t tell me what it is.”

Fan through the cards face up, asking the spectator to remember the card at the position of their number.

“Have you got your card? Great! Now I’m going to turn away, and I want you to push over the same number of cards as the number you thought of and cut them to the bottom. Don’t tell me what number you’re using. Just do it and then hand the packet back to me when you’re done.”

Turn away while the spectator makes their cut. When they return the packet to you, their card is now on top.

Perform an overhand shuffle, bringing the top card to the bottom where you can glimpse it.

Continue shuffling, placing their card somewhere in the middle of the packet.

“In magic, we often speak about the power of ritual. The ritual you just performed—thinking of a number and cutting the cards—has created a connection between your mind and the cards. Hold the packet in your hands and concentrate on your card…”

Wait a moment while they concentrate.

“I’m getting an image… your card is the [name their card]!”

Explanation

This trick works because of a mathematical principle. Here’s why it works:

You start with 10 cards that the spectator has randomly selected.

The spectator thinks of a number k (between 1 and 10) and remembers the card at that position.

You demonstrate cutting by making three specific cuts:

First cut: 2 cards from top to bottom

Second cut: 3 cards from top to bottom

Third cut: 4 cards from top to bottom

The key is that your final demonstration (cutting 4 cards) places the cards in a special arrangement where:

If the spectator cuts any number k from top to bottom, their chosen card will end up at the top position!

This happens because after your three demonstration cuts, you’ve effectively cut a total of 9 cards (2+3+4) from top to bottom. With 10 cards total, this is equivalent to cutting 9 cards or cutting 10-1=9 cards, which means you’ve essentially moved every card down one position from its original place.

When the spectator then cuts their number k, they move their card (which was at position k originally, then at position k-1 after your demonstrations) exactly k positions further down. When you cut k positions in a packet of 10 cards, you move a card exactly 10-k positions up. Since their card was at position k-1, moving it up 10-k positions puts it at position (k-1)+(10-k)=9, which is the top card!

The brilliance of this trick is that the mathematical principle ensures their card ends up on top regardless of what number they chose. You then shuffle it to the bottom to glimpse it, and finally place it in the middle before the reveal.

For more tricks like this, check out Scam Nation’s “Sniffing Out Cursed/Blessed/Blursed Cards!” at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfQ6kJFWKk0 and Jon Racherbaumer’s “Bubkus Divination” which you can find at https://robertjwallace.com/jon-racherbaumers-freebies/.
