Like most self working tricks it uses a setup and this is my method for getting the deck set. I have the spectator shuffle the deck. Then I take it and cull the four aces to the top using my Two Step cull.

The setup is to have two aces at positions 2 and 4. The other two aces should be in the middle of the deck with one indifferent card between them.

I get a break under the top two aces and double cut them to the bottom. Then start an overhand shuffle by taking about 1/4 of the cards as a block to start the shuffle. Then shuffle off the remaining cards, letting the last two cards (the aces) fall last so they are on top of the deck.

Now do a single in faro shuffle and the cards should be set.

Now you can proceed as described in Nick Trost’s book. To begin, fan the deck with the faces toward you. Split the deck in half so there is an ace in the second and fourth positions from the top of each half. Jog shuffle each half, retaining the top four cards of each. Give a spectator a choice of either half.

Have the spectator follows your actions. Begin dealing off pairs from the top of your half into a face-down pile on the table and stop after you have dealt five or six pairs. The spectator does the same with his half, stopping wherever he wants.

Lift up the top card of those dealt, turn it face up, and rub it on your sleeve to “magnetize” it. Then, place it face up onto the remaining cards in your hand. You call this your magnetic card. Finally, pick up the dealt cards and drop them on top of the magnetic card. The spectator follows the same procedure with his cards.

Now, deal off pairs into a tabled pile as before, making sure you deal somewhere past the face-up magnetic card, then stop. Once done, drop the rest of your cards (the undealt ones) on top. Again, the spectator follows your actions with his cards, stopping past his magnetic card wherever he wants, then dropping his undealt cards on top.

Ribbon spread your cards face down on the table, and the spectator does the same. You each remove your magnetic card and the face-down card on either side of it. These face-down cards are turned over to reveal the four aces.

Notes

Some times, after the spectator shuffles the deck, the aces will be in locations that let you cull them so that two are on top and two are together, either a quarter of the way from the bottom or the top. In that case, you can skip the double cut and overhand shuffle. Just do an in-Faro and you are set to go.

Nick Trost’s Subtle Card Creations Vol. 2 has a trick called the Magnetic Cards.
