When looking at a haymaker or milk stack the first thing I usually notice is that the first milking action usually can be replaced with either a simple run of cards or with riffle shuffles. The advantage of replacing the first action with riffle shuffles is that it makes the stacking seem more unlikely. The sequence the other players or spectators see is riffle shuffles, then a short series of overhand shuffles, followed by several cuts. The Judas Stack is one of these stacks that can replace one of the milking sequences the riffle shuffles. I start with three Aces on the bottom and one on the top of the deck.

Riffle shuffle twice, keeping the three aces on the bottom and adding a total of eight cards on top of the top ace. The several riffle shuffles to “prove” the deck is well mixed.

Now take the deck in position for an overhand shuffle. Assuming a five handed game, start with a top/bottom milk, and then run three more cards. Then throw the pack back to the bottom, under the five cards you just ran.

Immediately lift up half of the bottom part of the deck (I.E. undercut) and start another overhand shuffle with this half, onto the top of the deck. Milk the top and bottom cards and run seven more. Then throw the rest back to the bottom.

Now take the entire deck, milk the top and bottom cards, run three more and throw the rest on top, but slightly injogged. Square up the cards taking a left little finger break above the bottom five cards.

Cut half of the deck to the table. As your right hand comes back to get the remainder of the cards, use your left little finger to kick out the lower right corner of the card above the break . Take the cards in the right hand and complete the cut. There will be a card slightly sticking out, marking where the stack is.

Note that you keep your right hand above the deck which hides the outjogged card. The right hand immediately picks up the deck and places it into the left hand, allowing the left fingers to press up on the outjogged card to get a break under it.

Now cut half of the cards above the break to the table, then cut to the break, dropping these on top of the tabled cards, and then drop the remaining cards on top. The deck is now stacked for a five handed game of draw poker.

Below is a video of me practicing the shuffle. In this video I am stacking the four kings.

In the first twelve seconds I am riffle shuffling to add the eight indifferent cards on top of the top king.

At 27 seconds I have completed the last milk shuffle and am taking a break above the five bottom cards.

At 30 seconds I have kicked out the outjogged card. Note how the right hand is providing cover. I then do a triple cut to bring the stack to the top.

Afterthoughts

Obviously you can do this without the riffle shuffles. Simply undercut and run eight cards. Then throw the rest back to the bottom.

Suppose you just culled the four aces to the top of the deck. Run three cards to the bottom and throw the remainder on top. Then do the undercut and run eight cards, then throw to the bottom. The continue the Judas shuffle: milk and run three, then throw to the bottom. Undercut half of the deck and milk and run seven, throw back to the bottom. Milk and run three and then throw remainder of deck back on the bottom, instead of holding a break. Then follow up with an overhand false shuffle.

Variations are wonderful things.

Stacking the deck for poker has a long history.
