The basic plot is that the spectator selects a card, which is returned to the deck and lost. You remove nine cards and show them to the spectator. The spectators card is not among the nine. You explain how these nine cards can be used as a lie detector. You tell the spectator that you are going to ask two questions and that they may lie or tell the truth to each question, and that you will tell them both questions before you begin.

The questions, you tell them, are “What was your card?” and “Did you tell the truth or lie?”

By dealing out the nine cards, based on their answers, you can tell if the lied or told the truth, and if they lied about their card, you also can tell them the card they took.

Método

Have a card selected and control it to the tenth card from the top. I simple double cut the card to the top of the deck and then do several riffle shuffles, adding four cards on top in the first shuffle, and five more on the second shuffle. You could also do this with overhand shuffles.

With the deck face down, spread over nine cards and flip them face up on top of the deck. As you do this, get a break under the tenth card. Lift the ten cards off the deck. The audience thinks there are nine cards. The right hand is holding the ten cards in a Biddle grip. The left hand is holding the deck. With the left thumb pull the top face up card off the right hand packet and rotated it face down under the packet. Do this a second time, but keep a right thumb break above the card as it is placed on the bottom of the packet. As you pull and rotate the third face up card, your right hand adds the card under the break back onto the top of the left hand cards. Continue pulling and rotating the face up cards under the packet until all the cards have been shown.

I usually place the left hand cards to the table during the “pull and rotate” process after the third card has been pulled and rotated.

At this point the spectators card, unbeknownst to them, is on top of the packet of nine cards. You need to move it to the third from the top. This can be done with cuts to the packet.

You are now set. Ask the two questions. “What was your card?” and “Did you tell the truth or lie?” Take the card they named (it doesn’t matter what card they name) and deal one card at a time down to the table for the value of the card. For example, if they said “five of spades” deal out four cards spelling “F”, “I”, “V” and “E”. Drop the remaining cards on top of the dealt cards. Pick up the nine cards. Continue dealing for the word “OF”. Drop the remaining cards on top of the two dealt cards, and pick up the nine cards. Then repeat this process for the suit: “S”, “P”, “A”, “D”, “E”, “S”. Drop the remaining cards on top and pick up the nine cards.

What is amazing about this process is that it always places the selection in the middle of the nine card packet. The selection is the fifth card down in the packet.

So now, depending on the spectators answer, deal out the word “TRUTH” or “LIED”. If you spell “TRUTH” the selected card is the last card dealt, if “LIED” it is the top card remaining in the hand. So if “TRUTH”, just push the last card dealt forward, and drop the remaining cards on top of the other cards dealt. If “LIED”, drop all the remaining cards onto the dealt cards and then push the top card forward.

Peek at the card, not letting the spectator see the face of the card, and you can then tell them if they told the truth or lied. As the kicker, flip the card over to show them it is their card.

I am getting old and forgetful.
