The first is that you place a prediction down on the table. The prediction is a card that they spectator is about to select, using a phone (theirs or yours). You use the phones internet browser to go to a web site that shows a deck of cards that are face up in new deck order. There are two buttons above the cards: Shuffle and Toggle Backs.

Start of app with deck in new deck order.

You demonstrate the shuffle button, pressing it several times to demonstrate how the cards are shuffled each time the button is pressed.

After shuffle button pressed multiple times

Then you press the Toggle backs button to demonstrate that it turns all of the cards over.

After Toggle Backs has been pressed

And finally, you show that tapping the back of a card will cause it to turn over.

Turning a card.

You hand the spectator the phone and tell them to press the Shuffle button as many times as they want, and then to touch any card that they want.

The card they touch matches your prediction.

The second effect can be done stand-alone, or as a follow-up to the first effect. The second effect is a mind reading effect. The spectator presses the shuffle button as many times as they want, and then select a card by touching one of the face down cards. You have your back turned as they do this. They look at the card and mentally try to transmit it to you. You reveal their thought of card.

Método

The method is based on stacked decks. The page supports the following stacks: “Osterland”, “DAO”, “Si Stebbins3”, “Si Stebbins4”, “Eight Kings”, “Aronson”, “Tamariz”, “Joyal”, “Nikola”. I use the DAO stack, which is the default stack. But most magicians will at least know the Si Stebbins stacks. You select which stack is going to be use by the URL. The default URL is http://robertjwallace.com/mental/. But if you want to use any of the other stacks you add a ?0 for the Osterland stack, a ?1 for DAO, a ?2 for Si Stebbins 3, a ?3 for Si Stebbins4, etc.

For explanation I will use the Si Stebbins 3 stack, so the URL to go to would be http://robertjwallace.com/mental/?2 for the mind reading effect or for the prediction effect replace the ?2 with ?2m. (actually the ¨m¨ can be any character or word.)

For the first effect (prediction), in order to force the card you which to predict you need to know the card that precedes it the the stack. For example if you want to force the Queen of Heart in the Si Stebbins 3 stack, the card before it is the Nine of Clubs. (Nine of clubs -> nine +3 = queen, and clubs come before hearts in CHaSD order.)

To code the suit (clubs), with the deck in new deck order, you demonstrate the buttons, press the shuffle button when the cards are still face up to code the suit. Shuffle once for clubs, twice for Hearts, three times for Spades, and four times for Diamonds.

Then press the Toggle Backs button to turn the cards face down. Now to code the card value (nine), turn over the ninth card from the left on any row. You have now got the application set up to turn over the queen of hearts. If you want, you can press any card first, but press the ninth card last to set the value. Press the shuffle button which will complete the setting of the card to be displayed.

Now let the spectator shuffle the cards. They can shuffle with the cards face up or face down. When they are satisfied, if the cards are face up have them turn them face down and shuffle once more.

With the cards face down, no matter what card they touch, it will be the prediction!

You can now move directly to the second effect.

Now when ever they turn a card over it will be the next card in the stack. So, for example, they could turn over the queen of hearts and touch another card. What ever card they touch will the the Two of Spades.

If you want to just do the second effect, change the URL to http://robertjwallace.com/mental?2

Now when you demonstrate the shuffle button with the cards face up, the card at position 1 (top left, first row, first card) is you key. Just note what that card is before the cards are turned face down. The spectator can hit the shuffle button as many times as they want, with the cards face up or face down. But have them turn the cards face down and shuffle at least one time more. Then what ever card the select will be the next card in the stack.

Considerations

When they have the backs displayed and a card touch, the system will replace all of the cards on the screen with the cards in the stack order. So you should not have them keep the turned over cards face up because if they click on enough cards they may spot the stack. It is best that after each revelation they press the shuffle button again. This is also why after showing the backs, the user is forced to shuffle the deck.

Back Designs

You can change the back design by adding to the url query string a back command with the number of the back design you want. For example:

http://robertjwallace.com/mental/?back1 or http://robertjwallace.com/mental/?back1&s2

the second changes the back design, sets the stack and puts the page into prediction mode.

Currently there are two additional back designs: back1 and back2.

back1

back2

Give it a try and if you have any issues or comments feel free to reach out to me.

I have been intrigued with some of the smart phone apps for magic.
