Since I tend to forget them, and where I saw them, here is a collection of techniques. None are mine originally, probably. These are all just using four red and four black cards. There are a lot of versions of Oil and Water using extra hidden cards, but I like the purist handling of just using eight cards.

Using a second deal

Show the four reds and four blacks face up and spread in your left hand.

Turn them face down

Deal the four red cards, face down, into a pile on your right, but deal a second on the fourth card.

Deal the four “black” (really a red and three blacks) cards, face down, into a pile on your left.

Pick up the red pile with your right hand, and the black pile with your left.

Alternate pushing off a card, starting with the left hand, and dropping it face down into a pile.

Pick up the pile of “mixed” cards, give them a “magical” shake and deal off the top four cards, turning them face up as you deal, into a pile on your right, but do a second deal on the fourth deal.

Deal the last four cards face up to the left to show that the mixed up cards separated.

Alternatively you can set the cards up for an Elmsley count display. Do the first five steps above, but at step six, push off starting with the right hand instead of the left. Then pick up the pile which is in RRBRBRBB order and deal off the first four cards face down into a pile. As you deal them down you can explain that these cards are alternating red, black, red, black. You then flip over the cards in your left hand and Elmsley count them to show them all black, and then pick up the dealt pile, flip those face up and Elmsley count them to show them all red.

Second Deal to go from separated to interleaved with a glide

You apparently show the four red cards, and the four black cards, drop the red on top of the black and then show them magically interwoven.

Start with the red cards on top of the black.

Deal four cards (supposedly red) to the right, but second deal the fourth card.

Continue to deal the remaining four cards (supposedly black) to the left, but second deal the first card.

Pick up each pile in each hand, keeping them square and turn the wrists to display each piles bottom card, red on the right and black on the left.

Turn the wrists back and drop the black cards to the table, face down, and then the red cards face down on top of the black. The actual order of the cards from the top is BRRRBBRB

Pick up the cards face down in the left hand in glide position. Pull out and lay down the bottom three cards, one at a time in a face up overlapping row.

Glide back the fourth card and dealing the next.

Deal the card you had glided in step seven

Simply take the last two cards with your right hand, thumb on top fingers below and turn them face up, spreading them slightly and drop them face up at the end of the row.

Second Deal to go from separated to interleaved with only seconds

You apparently show the four red cards, and the four black cards, drop the red on top of the black and then show them magically interwoven.

Start with the red cards on top of the black. Deal four cards (supposedly red) to the right, but second deal the fourth card.

Continue to deal the remaining four cards (supposedly black) to the left, but second deal the first two cards.

Pick up each pile in each hand, keeping them square and turn the wrists to display each piles bottom card, red on the right and black on the left.

Turn the wrists back and drop the black cards to the table, face down, and then the red cards face down on top of the black. The actual order of the cards from the top is BRRRBRBB

Pick up the cards and deal them face up in an overlapping row, dealing seconds on the first, fourth, and sixth cards.

Biddle

Begin with the red cards face up on top of the face up black cards.

Pick up the packet and hold it face up in right-hand Biddle grip.

With the left thumb, peel off the four reds face up into the left hand and get a left little-finger break beneath the third red card.

Now peel off the first black card into the left hand; as you do, pick up the two reds above the break beneath the right hand cards.

Peel off two more black cards and place the last black, with the two red cards hidden beneath it, as one card on top of the left-hand cards. (order is now BRRBBBRR)

Turn the packet face down and hold it in the left hand. Spread over the top four cards into the right hand and table these cards face down. “The red cards are the water ” you say as the right hand picks up the top two cards of the tabled pile, shows they are red, then replaces them face down onto the pile.

“The black cards are the oil, ” you say as the top card of the left-hand pile is taken in the right hand, then both it and the bottom card of the left hand pile are shown to be black. The right-hand card is placed beneath the left-hand cards.

Now alternate the cards face down into a separate pile. Begin with a card from the in-hand packet, the “oil,” then continue until all eight cards have been alternated.

Pick up the packet and give it a gentle shake. “The oil always comes to the top, ” you say as you deal the top four black cards face up on the table into an overlapping row. Fan the left-hand cards face down, tilt the fan and show the four reds.

Elmsley Count

Interleave the eight cards face up, in red, black order (i.e. RBRBRBRB) and display the cards.

Square up the cards and take them in the right hand biddle grip (face up)

With your left thumb, pull off the first black card into your left hand palm, calling out its color.

Continue to pull off the next three cards, but on the last one (a red card), hold a break under it with your left little finger.

Steal the red card under the cards in your right hand as you pull off the next black card.

Continue to pull off the last three cards, with the last card hiding the stolen card.

Your left hand now holds the cards in BRBBRBRR order. Turn the pile face down in the left hand.

Push off the top four cards (not changing the order) and drop them face down on your right.

Flip over the cards in your left hand and perform an Elmsley count to show them all red, then drop them face down to your left.

Pick up the right hand pile, turning them face up and Elmsley count to show them all black. Drop them face down to your right

Another Elmsley

Assuming the cards have just been Elmsley counted, you have four cards face down in BRRR order from the top, and the other pile is in RBBB order, also from the top.

Pick up each pile face down, one in each hand, and briefly turn the palms up to flash the bottom cards, showing different colors.

Turn the palms face down and thumb off the top card of each and into separate piles. The top card of the left hand going to a left pile, and the top card of the right hand going to a right hand pile.

Slightly push off the top cards of each hand as you turn your palms face up flashing the faces of the cards. Turn the palms down and push off the left hand card dropping it onto the right hand pile. Drop the right hand card on to the left hand pile.

You now have two cards left in each hand. Push off the top cards and drop them. The left hand card onto the left hand pile, and the right hand card onto the right hand pile.

Drop the last two cards, the left hand card going onto the right hand pile and the right hand card going onto the left hand pile.

You are now set to pick up each pile, turning them face up and Elmsley counting them to show that they are no longer mixed.

Another Elmsley

Assuming the cards have just been Elmsley counted, you have four cards face down in BRRR order from the top, and the other pile is in RBBB order, also from the top.

Pick up the two top cards from each pile, two in the left hand and two in the right

Drop the two right hand cards face down onto the left hand pile, and drop the two left hand cards face down onto the right hand pile.

You are now set to pick up each pile, turning them face up and Elmsley counting them to show that they are no longer mixed.

Lay down spread

Begin with cards face up, black on top of the red cards

Push off the four black cards and display them, then drop them face down onto the table.

Spread and display the red cards, then flip them face down onto your left palm,

Do an Ascanio Spread like technique to pull out the two middle cards, as one, from the left hand packet and flip the cards face up onto the left hand cards. It should look like you turned over one card. Keep a break under the two cards.

Pick up one of the face down black cards and place it face up, injogged onto the face up red card in your left hand.

Flip the “2” face up cards (really three), face down and square up the packet. Then push off the top card, calling it red, and drop it face down to your left.

Push off the next face down card and deal it overlapping the first deal card and call it black. They are really two red cards.

Pull out the middle card of the left hand cards and flip it face up onto the left hand packet. Take one of the face down black cards and flip it face up, injogged, onto the left hand cards.

Flip the two cards face down and deal them face down overlapping the first two dealt cards.

Perform a frustration count display by taking the two face down left hand cards into your right hand (gripped in a biddle grip) and turn your right palm face up to show the red card. A black card is hidden behind it.

Turn your right hand palm down and replace the cards into the left hand, which then thumbs off the top black card onto the overlapping row of dealt cards.

As you are thumbing off that card, with the right hand pick up a black card, flash it and deal it onto the overlapping row.

Flash the last remaining card in your right hand and drop it down onto the overlapping row

Pick up the last black card and flash it, dropping it down onto the overlapping row.

Pick up the eight cards and place them into your left hand. The order of the cards is BRBBBRRR

Pick up the face down cards and place them face down into your left hand. Flip over the top black card and as you do that take a break under the second card (a red card) as the top card falls onto it.

With your right hand, thumb on top, pick up the double from the left and packet and use it to flip over, one at a time, the next three cards, taking each one on top of the right and cards. This displays four black cards, with one face down red card hidden beneath.

Place the face up black cards onto the face down cards in your left and then deal the four black face up cards onto the table.

Flip the remaining cards (the four red cards) face up to display them and deal them down.

BRBBBRRR alternative

From step 15 this is alternative. Spread over the top four cards and drop them face down to the right, not changing their order.

With your right hand pick up the top two cards from that pile and show them, then drop them back down.

Push off two cards from the left hand and hold them in your right hand in a spread, with the bottom card spread to the left. Using your right fingers, flip the bottom card of the spread over, face up onto the left hand cards.

Now flip the remaining right hand card over onto the left hand cards to show the alternating colors.

Turn over both cards onto the face down cards in the left hand. You have secretly reversed the order of those two cards.

Both piles of four cards are now in position to perform Elmsley counts to show the colors separated.

From Elmsley to a Second

Assuming that the cards have been dealt and displayed using Elmsley counts, and the piles are in RBBB and BRRR order (from the top with the piles face down).

Pick up either pile and spread the cards face down in your left hand.

Pick up the top card of the pile on the table and insert it into the spread, second from the bottom.

Pick up the next card from the table and insert it into the spread third from the top.

Take the next card and place it second from the top and then the last card is placed on top of the left hand spread.

The order of the cards, from the top, is now RRRBRBBB. Now deal three red cards face up, and on the fourth card deal a face up second. Then deal the remaining four black cards face up to show the colors separated.

From Interleaved to Elmsley with a Second

Starting with the cards interleaved, i.e. RBRBRBRB, display the faces and then turn the cards face down and hold them in the left hand in dealing position

Deal four cards face down to the right, dealing a second on the second and fourth deal.

Deal the remaining four cards, fairly, to the left

Both piles are ready for Elmsley count displays showing that the cards have separated.

From a Second to an Elmsley

Display the cards face up in a spread, with the colors separated BBBBRRRR.

Flip the packet face down and start to deal the first four cards into a pile on your right, but do a second deal on the fourth card. The face down pile is in RBBB order from the top.

Deal the remaining four cards down to a pile on your left. They are in RRRB order.

Pick up the left pile in you left hand and spread the cards face down.

Pick up the right hand pile and spread them in your right hand.

Now weave the two spreads so the the bottom right hand card goes second from the bottom of the left hand spread. Basically do a mini faro shuffle.

Deal the top four cards onto the table. They are ready to be Elmsley counted to show them.

Flip the four cards in your left hand face up and Elmsley count them to show them

Alternating climax

Here are two methods for showing the cards magically mixed RBRBRBRB after they have been shown separated. In both of these case, you have shown the cards separated by use of the Elmsley count, but have placed the last card of the count to the bottom of the packet. In a normal Elmsley the cards end up in RBBB or BRRR order, but by placing the last card to the rear of the packet the cards end up back in BRBB or RBRR order.

First method, using the glide

Turn both packets face down and then drop the “black” packet on top of the red one.

Pick up the combined packet and turn the wrist to show a red card on the bottom, then turn the wrist back (turning the packet face down) and with your right hand turn and show the top black card as you say “the black cards are on top of the red ones).

Replace the top black card face down and take the packet in a left hand glide position.

With your right fingers pull out the bottom red card and turn it face up placing it onto the table. As your do this, your left fingers “glide” or pull back the bottom card.

Now pull out the second card from the bottom, a black card.

Now pull out another second card from the bottom, a red card.

And finally perform a final “glide” pulling out another second, which is a black card.

Finish by fairly pulling out bottom cards. to show the cards have magically mixed.

Second method, using a second deal

Turn both packets face down and then drop the “black” packet on top of the red one.

Pick up the combined packet and turn the wrist to show a red card on the bottom, then turn the wrist back (turning the packet face down) and with your right hand turn and show the top black card as you say “the black cards are on top of the red ones).

Now deal the cards in an overlapping row from left to right, dealing a second on the fourth card and on the sixth, to show the cards have magically mixed.

Building Routines

Obviously you can combine the above methods in different ways to build a routine. Here is on example.

Start with “Using a Second Deal”

Pick up the two piles, one in each hand and interleave them as you did in step one, by dealing alternatively.

Do “From Interleaved to Elmsley with a Second” ending with Elmsley counts to show the cards separated.

Do “From Elmsley to a Second” which ends with the cards actually separated.

Take the red and black cards face up and cleanly interleave them, showing them in mixed condition. Turn them face down and do “From Interleaved to Elmsley with a Second” . Elmsley count each pile to show the colors separated, but place the last card counted in each Elmsley to the rear.

Finish with the “Alternating Climax”

There are many techniques used to show the mixing of cards and magical separation.
