Griddle is a 5×5 word-grid puzzle. The grid hides five row words (left → right) and five column words (top ↓ bottom). Solve all five rows to win.
Selecting a target
- Click any cell → targets that row (highlighted green).
- Double-click any cell → targets that column (highlighted blue).
- Space bar → toggles between the current row and column.
- Tab → moves to the next unsolved row (or column). Shift + Tab goes backward.
The numbered label at the edge of the active row or column lights up to confirm your target. A blinking cursor marks the next cell waiting for a letter.
Making a guess
Type letters using the on-screen keyboard or your physical keyboard. The word submits automatically once all positions are filled — no Enter needed.
- Backspace — removes the last letter typed.
- Escape — clears the letters you have typed so far.
Each letter is scored after submission:
- A Green — correct letter, correct position.
- A Yellow — correct letter for this word, wrong position.
- A Blue — letter exists elsewhere in the grid.
- A Gray — letter is not in the grid at all.
If a word is not in the dictionary, or you have already tried that word for this row or column, it will be rejected.
Locked letters
A green letter is locked in place. On your next guess for that row or column the locked letters are pre-filled — just type the remaining ones.
Column guesses
Guessing columns is optional but powerful. Column feedback locks letters into the grid and helps you narrow down the row words. Solving a column is not required to win.
Keyboard colours
- A confirmed in the correct position somewhere in the grid.
- A in the grid but not yet placed correctly.
- A exists in the grid, in a different word.
- A not in the grid at all — dimmed for easy reference.
Revealing a letter
Right-click (or long-press on mobile) any cell to reveal its letter as a hint. Revealed cells show a purple border.
